2014 Scholarships Awarded

A total of $38,000 in New York Schools Insurance Foundation scholarships has been awarded to 11 high school seniors from NYSIR districts across New York.

The Bambino Scholarship
, in memory of the daughter of NYSIR Risk Management Director Robert Bambino, is awarded to special education students for their outstanding efforts in working through special challenges to complete high school and be accepted at a college or university. The Jensen Scholarship, in memory of Paul Jensen, a NYSIR marketing representative known for his craftsmanship, is presented to college-bound students who have demonstrated inspired design and building skills during their high school careers.

NYSIR’s Annual Cristin Ann Bambino and Paul Jensen Memorial scholarships are funded by the reciprocal and nearly 20 other New York State business organizations.

The 2014 Bambino Scholarship recipients and their awards are: 

  • Kimberly Doherty, Arlington High School, $5,000 (Grand Winner, Mid-Hudson Valley region)
  • Spencer Berger, Roslyn High School, $4,000 (Runner-up, Nassau County)
  • Quinton Baxter, Mynderse Academy, $3,000 (Rochester-Syracuse)
  • Megan Farrell, Goshen High School, $3,000 (Southern Tier)
  • Thomas Georger, Hamburg High School, $3,000 (Greater Buffalo )
  • Robert Jones, Briarcliff Manor High School, $3,000 (Lower-Hudson Valley )
  • John Pelkey, Northeastern Clinton Central School, $3,000 (North Country)
  • Kierra Rice, Mount Sinai High School, $3,000 (Suffolk County)
  • Samantha Smith, Arlington High School, $3,000 (Mid-Hudson Valley) 

The nine winners were selected from nearly 300 applicants.



The two recipients of the 2014 Jensen Award were:

  • Luke Anderson, Oneonta High School, $5,000 (Grand Winner, Rochester-Syracuse area)
  • Robert Gullo, Pearl River High School, $3,000 (Lower-Hudson Valley region).
