Cyber Liability and Network Security
School districts interested in how to deal with heightened Internet risk and potential network security issues are invited to attend a free, half-day seminar on cyber liability sponsored by NYSIR.
The seminar, for NYSIR subscribers only, will be held at Howard Johnson Inn and Suites in Cooperstown, N.Y., from 8:30 a.m. to noon on May 14. Presentations may be of value to IT managers, security directors, central office administrators, board members and other district employees whose responsibilities include network and computer security. More than one person from each district may attend.
Registration and a continental breakfast begin at 8:30. Lunch will be provided following the seminar. The chief presenter, Peter Reilly of the New York State Association of Computers and Technology in Education, will provide an overview of Internet safety, issues associated with peer-to-peer websites such as MySpace and Facebook, e-discovery and disaster records recovery.

To help school districts deal with rising Internet-based risks, potential network security issues and the need for organized communications with the community, NYSIR is presenting a free, half-day seminar on cyber liability, network security and crisis management.
The seminar, for NYSIR subscribers only, was held at the Westchester Marriott Hotel in Tarrytown, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Presentations may be of value to IT managers, security directors, central office administrators, board members and other district employees whose responsibilities include public liaison or network and computer security.
Registration and a continental breakfast began at 8:30. Lunch was provided. Speakers provided an overview of Internet safety and address exposures that may arise from peer-to-peer websites such as MySpace and Facebook. Additionally, an expert discussed the importance of crisis management plans and techniques for successfully working with media and the school community during and after a school-related crisis.

Presentations were considered of value to IT managers, security officials, central office administrators, board members and other district employees whose responsibilities include public liaison or network and computer security.
Registration and a continental breakfast began at 8:30. Lunch was provided. Speakers addressed exposures that may arise from Internet and e-mail bullying, harassment and other activities that could violate district policies and result in criminal charges. A separate crisis management seminar included discussion about techniques for successfully working with media and the school community during and after a school-related crisis.

Violence in Schools
NYSIR presented a free, in-depth seminar titled School Violence: Causes, Exposures and Solutions from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Saratoga Springs.
For NYSIR subscribers only, the seminar featured experts who analyzed the issue from several different perspectives, including threat assessment protocols, the role of the district attorney, the role of the school attorney, Internet crimes and cyber-liability.

Cyber Threats and Immigration Liability
For school districts concerned about the rising risk potential associated with Internet-based student harassment and illegal immigration, NYSIR presented a free, half-day seminar on cyber threats, as well as employee identity and immigration liability.
The seminar, for NYSIR subscribers only, was held at the Smithtown Sheraton from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Presentations were considered a value to human resource and IT managers, security officials, central office administrators, board members and other district employees.
Registration and a continental breakfast began at 8:30. Lunch was provided. Speakers addressed exposures that could arise from Internet and e-mail bullying, harassment and other activities that might violate district policies and result in criminal charges. A separate seminar on immigration covered legal issues, methods for identifying and determining the employment status of district employees, discrimination and civil rights issues, and the use of I-9 forms.

Changes in Public Playground Standards plus an
Update on Green Cleaning Laws
For school district personnel
involved in playground inspection or building maintenance, NYSIR joined
with the New York Municipal Insurance Reciprocal and BOCES of Southern
Westchester to present a free, half-day seminar on changes in standards
governing public playgrounds and a discussion about new green cleaning
legislation.
The seminar featured
experts in the legal, maintenance and risk-management implications of
New York’s statewide playground law, as well as an official from the
state Office of General Services who outlined updates in New York’s green
cleaning legislation. Topics included playground inspection techniques,
hazard identification, and preventive maintenance, as well as information
about green-cleaning compliance issues, how to start a green cleaning
program, and a listing of acceptable cleaning products.

Employment-related Practices
For NYSIR school district
personnel involved in hiring, managing and disciplining employees, the
New York Schools Insurance Reciprocal presented a free, half-day seminar
on employment-related practices and human resource processes.
The seminar featured
an expert in school-related human resource issues and an attorney specializing
in public-sector employment litigation. Topics included workplace
harassment, unlawful retaliation, maintenance
of personnel files, corrective discipline,
recruiting and hiring and employee handbooks.
Registration and a continental
breakfast began at 8 a.m., and the seminar was open to NYSIR district
superintendents, business officials, human resource directors and department
supervisors. Lunch was provided.

Changes in Public Playground Standards
NYSIR and Eastern Suffolk
BOCES had partnered to present a seminar on New York State playground
laws and health and safety updates.
The seminar featured
a Wright Risk attorney who discussed the legal implications of state playground
laws, a loss control specialist addressed maintenance and documentation,
as well as a BOCES safety and administrative support manager offered
safety compliance updates.
Registration and a continental
breakfast began at 8:30 a.m., and the meeting was recommended for individuals
whose responsibilities involve the inspection and maintenance of playgrounds,
as well as those charged with safety compliance, including district
facility directors, school business officials and safety and health
committee members.
The seminar was free for
all NYSIR and Eastern Suffolk BOCES subscribers, but seating was limited.

Fundamentals of Electrical Maintenance
NYSIR and Hartford Steam
Boiler offered a free, full-day seminar for NYSIR members on the
basics of preventive maintenance of school electrical distribution equipment.
The seminar covered
topics that include recommended standards for effective electrical maintenance
programs; surge protection; use of emergency generators; and infrared
thermography. The course was intended for building maintenance personnel,
custodians, facilities managers, maintenance planners and superintendents
of buildings and grounds.

School Emergency Planning
The NYSIR
Risk Management Institute, New York State Education Department Facilities
Planning and OCM BOCES Safety and Risk Management have joined to sponsor
an exclusive free seminar on school emergency planning for NYSIR members.
The seminar
addressed such topics as State Education Department requirements
for school emergency planning, how to conduct a hazard analysis
of school buildings, short- and long-term planning strategies,
a multi-hazard approach to school emergency planning,
incident command systems and emergency exercises.
The seminar
was opened to all school district employees with
emergency planning responsibilities, including business administrators,
building and grounds personnel, transportation supervisors, Athletic
Department personnel and field trip coordinators.
